The Beginning

Net Friends Founded by David Scarborough in 1997

Net Friends was established by David Scarborough in Durham, North Carolina in 1997. David served Net Friends for over 20 years, before handing care over to his business partners, John Snyder and Neelesh Patel, in 2020 to pursue new endeavors.

Net Friends was established by David Scarborough in Durham, North Carolina in 1997. David served Net Friends for over 20 years, before handing care over to his business partners, John Snyder and Neelesh Patel, in 2020 to pursue new endeavors.

Building the Business

In 1998, Net Friends made its first hiring selections, while building its core business structures. David purchased our first downtown Durham office building on Main Street.

By 1999, the company had grown into a mighty team of 5 employees, including John Snyder, our now CEO and co-owner.

In 1998, Net Friends made its first hiring selections, while building its core business structures. David purchased our first downtown Durham office building on Main Street.

Becoming HIPAA Experts

Serving Duke University

In the early years, Net Friends technicians were 100% engaged in delivering IT support to Duke University. We were exclusively focused on contracting with Duke.

By 2001, Net Friends was informed that the new HIPAA law would be a core reason why the University was shifting to in-house IT support. One of the Directors of IT at Duke favored Net Friends and presented us with an opportunity to radically innovate our service offerings and become HIPAA experts.

Serving Duke University

Our Deep Roots in IT Security

Establishing Our Security-First Approach to IT

In 2003, Net Friends began delivering our first monthly security reports, issued to dozens of departments across Duke's campus. Within two years, we were collaborating with Duke to consolidate dozens of AD domains into a single campus-wide domain, while also growing our stewardship over the largest collection of cardiac images in the world.

By 2008, we had cemented ourselves as a one-stop-shop for all things IT with over 30 employees. We began offering compliance auditing services and capped the year by signing an agreement with Duke University to become their preferred outsourced IT company.

SciMed Solutions Spins Off

Closing out the decade, John Snyder became co-owner of Net Friends, while SciMed Solutions, our custom software development arm, spins off into a sister company. Net Friends shifts into a lean team of 16 employees focused on IT support, IT security, and IT strategy.

Closing out the decade, John Snyder became co-owner of Net Friends, while SciMed Solutions, our custom software development arm, spins off into a sister company. Net Friends shifts into a lean team of 16 employees focused on IT support, IT security, and IT strategy.

Rapid Expansion

In 2011, Net Friends relaunched its website with newly defined core services. After 4 consecutive years of 40% year-over-year growth, we grew to a team of 47 staff and zeroed in on maintaining sustainable business growth.

In 2013, our leadership team expands with the promotions of 5 new managers. We established a clear organization chart and designed an employee onboarding and training program.

In 2016, Neelesh Patel became a co-owner of Net Friends. With his strong track record of building new teams at Net Friends, Neelesh spearheaded our business development initiatives. The drills we practiced as a company became key to supporting our now dispersed infrastructure and distributed workforce.

By the close of 2020, Net Friends focused on the fundamentals of what makes an MSP great: we rallied around our people. At the year's end, David Scarborough departed to focus on his other businesses; entrusting the future of Net Friends to his partners, John and Neelesh.
