What You Need to Know

  • VPNs are popular because they provide an encrypted pathway for internet traffic, protecting you from others seeing what you are doing.
  • There are risks associated with using a VPN. Security updates and up-to-date encryption minimize these risks.
  • Free VPNs are too risky and should be avoided.

Make sure you use a VPN from a reputable company that has current encryption and does not keep data logs.

What is a VPN?

Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, are a must-have for staying private and secure online. VPNs essentially create a private, secure pathway for your internet traffic, like a secret tunnel. This makes your online activities much more private and are often recommended when connecting to the internet using public Wi-Fi.

However, it is important to understand a key point: not all VPNs are inherently safe. While VPNs are a fantastic tool for internet privacy, they are not a magic shield that protects you from absolutely everything.

Why VPNs Are So Popular

Many companies use VPNs with their remote workforce. This keeps company information safe even when employees are using less secure home or public internet connections.

Imagine you are on public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop. Without a VPN, anyone else on that network could potentially see what you are doing online. A VPN scrambles your information, making it unreadable to others. This is especially important for sensitive tasks like online banking or checking work emails.

The key reason for VPN usage is data protection.

VPNs Risks You Need to Know

While VPNs offer great benefits, it is crucial to be aware of their potential weaknesses:

  • Unpatched VPN: Just like any computer program, VPN software can have weaknesses that clever hackers can find and exploit. If a VPN has these kinds of flaws, your data could be exposed, or in rare cases, even allow harmful software onto your device.
  • Outdated Security Measures: VPNs scramble your data through encryption. If a VPN uses outdated or weak encryption methods, it is like having a flimsy lock on a valuable safe. This makes it easier for attackers to break into and see your information.
  • Hidden Dangers in Free VPNs: Many free VPN apps have been found to do things that harm your privacy. This can include leaking your personal information, tracking, or putting harmful software on your device. This can include leaking your personal information, tracking, or putting harmful software on your device.
  • Incorrect Setup or Compromised Keys: Even if a VPN uses strong security, if it is not set up correctly or if the "keys" used to unlock your encrypted data fall into the wrong hands, your private pathway could be opened to attackers.

Real-World Examples of VPN Weaknesses

These are not just theoretical concerns.  We have seen numerous VPN hacks in 2025. These situations show why it matters that you are careful with your VPN selection.

Ivanti Connect Secure had a recent incident with a patched vulnerability being exploited. Hackers leveraged this flaw to deploy various malicious software, demonstrating how even patched vulnerabilities, if not addressed promptly by users, can be exploited. Many of these VPNs are still unpatched.

Many free VPN apps you can download have been found to leak user information, contain software that tracks you, or even carry harmful programs that could damage your device or steal your data. It is a reminder that "free" often comes with a hidden cost to your privacy.

A critical vulnerability was discovered in Check Point VPNs, allowing hackers to access sensitive information on their Security Gateway. This incident underscored how even reputable security companies can have exploitable flaws, and that timely patching is crucial.

How to Choose a Safe VPN

Given these potential risks, picking a new VPN is something to be done with care. You want to look for a trusted company that has a good reputation and a long history of protecting user privacy. Longevity and reputation tend to mean that they use the latest and strongest encryption.

Net Friends Pro-Tip: Look for a straightforward policy explaining that they do NOT keep records of what you do online.

Be sure to avoid free VPNs. While it is tempting to save money, the security risks with free VPNs are usually much higher than the benefits. It is better to invest in a paid, trustworthy service for true online protection.
